After serving as a Catholic priest for 17 years, Dr. Echezona Obiagbaosogu announced his decision to convert to African traditional religion.
Obiagbaosogu, who teaches African Traditional Religion at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State, told of his interest in rainmaking and traditional African spirituality.
He highlighted the abundance of resources and value found in Africa that have been impacted by colonial powers after defending his doctoral dissertation, “Rainmaking and Control in Igbo African Medicine.”
He conducted research with the goal of reclaiming lost African values after spending time learning the nuances of the craft from a well-known native physician.
“I have realized that my true calling is to serve my people through the ancient traditions of our ancestors,” Obiagbaosogu said in a statement. Before leaving to follow the traditional African religion, I served as a Catholic priest for seventeen years.
He emphasized the value of self-awareness and remaining receptive to reality when making life decisions as he reflected on his transition from priesthood to traditional African religion.
He stressed the importance of embracing African values and spirituality in a more genuine and meaningful way, even though he did not go into detail about the details of his resignation.
