Exclusive: Peter Obi Accused of “Political Charity” in Benue, Governor’s Aide Exposes Alleged Exploitation of IDPs for Relevance
Makurdi, Benue State – The Principal Special Assistant to the Governor of Benue State on National Programs, Civil Society, Voter Education, and Strategic Interventions, Solomon Semaka, has launched a scathing attack on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, accusing him of using the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state as a “political stunt” to regain relevance.
In a fiery statement issued on Monday, Semaka dismissed Obi’s planned visit to Benue’s IDP camps as a thinly veiled attempt to manipulate public sympathy ahead of potential political realignments. He alleged that the former Anambra governor has a history of “emotional blackmail and mind games,” exploiting vulnerable Nigerians for personal gain.
“Political Charity” or Desperate Gambit?
Semaka did not mince words, stating, “Peter Obi cannot ambush Benue State with charity. Even the United Nations does not operate this kind of charity model. What he planned was nothing short of a political maneuver disguised as humanitarian work, and the people of Benue are wiser now.”
The governor’s aide emphasized that Obi’s failure to secure proper authorization before his intended visit was a breach of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent directive banning unauthorized high-profile visits due to security concerns.
Governor Alia’s Firm Stance Against “Political Distractions”
Governor Alia had earlier issued a strict order regulating movements into Benue, citing the need to safeguard the state’s fragile security situation. Semaka reinforced this stance, describing Obi’s lamentations over his inability to reach the governor as “bad charity etiquette” and an attempt to force an entry without due protocol.
He further reiterated the state government’s unwavering commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, warning that Governor Alia would not tolerate any political distractions derailing his administration’s progress.
“Benue State is currently in the hands of a bold, courageous, and fearless leader who will not succumb to cheap political antics,” Semaka declared.
