Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing them as baseless and urging Nigerians to allow the courts to determine the matter.
Addressing the allegations, Akpabio maintained that he has never harassed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan or any other woman, emphasizing that he was raised by a single mother who instilled in him a deep respect for women.
“I want to state clearly that at no time did I ever attempt any sexual harassment on the said Distinguished Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan or any other woman for that matter,” Akpabio said.
He recounted his upbringing by his late mother, who passed away in the year 2000, stressing that he was taught the values of respect and dignity for women. “Even at that, I still cry till today,” he remarked, underscoring the emotional impact of his mother’s struggles in raising him and his siblings.
Akpabio also pointed to his track record as a public servant, recalling his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015. He highlighted his recognition as the “most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria,” which, according to him, further reinforces his respect for women.
While calling on the public and media to avoid drawing premature conclusions, Akpabio reaffirmed his faith in the judicial process.
“In conclusion, I urge all Nigerians, especially the media and members of the social media, to await the court’s decision and, of course, not jump into conclusions on matters of mere allegations,” he stated.
Expressing gratitude for the support he has received from colleagues, the Senate President thanked those who reached out to him through calls, solidarity messages, and prayers.
“I want to thank you for listening to me and thank some of my colleagues for the phone calls, support, solidarity, and prayers that the Almighty God will step in and vindicate the just.”
