The Minister for Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye, has issued guidance to women in Nigeria, advising them to avoid confrontations with their husbands in order to prevent potential physical violence that could result in harm or even death. This advice was given during a conference held on Wednesday in Abuja for Commissioners of State Ministries of Women Affairs across Nigeria, an event facilitated by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Phase II Programme, with funding from the European Union through the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).
Kennedy-Ohaneye implored women to seek peace in their homes, stating that a peaceful household largely depends on the woman’s contribution. She emphasized the importance of women maintaining silence during disputes, suggesting that talking back could escalate into violence, which could lead to severe consequences, including injury or bringing up children who might not contribute positively to society.
The minister also highlighted the potential for reconciliation, noting that in many cases, a man may apologize following an outburst. However, she cautioned against retaliating or engaging in a physical altercation, as the consequences could be dire, with the possibility of sustaining injuries that could not be undone.
In addition to her advice on domestic disputes, Kennedy-Ohaneye called for legislative action to address gender and sexual-based offenses more effectively. She advocated for the establishment of a mobile court dedicated to trying such cases swiftly. She announced plans to lead a protest to the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, urging for the signing of legislation to implement this mobile court.
Furthermore, the minister announced the launch of an integrity group intended to oversee the management of funds allocated for women’s empowerment. This initiative aims to ensure that donor funds are utilized appropriately and effectively, amid concerns that current practices may not be serving their intended purpose.
