Popular TV talk show Reality Radio and TV Talk Magazine recently highlighted a distressing incident wherein a family faced an unsettling demand from the police for financial assistance to rescue their loved ones held hostage by kidnappers in Mpape, a suburb of Abuja.
During the narration by the presenter, it was revealed that the family found themselves in a dire situation where the police requested a payment of N250,000 before offering any assistance in the rescue mission. Undeterred by the urgency of the situation, the family managed to gather N100,000, which they presented to the police in the hope that immediate action would be taken to track down the kidnappers.
However, the family’s hopes were shattered when the police, instead of initiating a rescue operation, advised them to directly negotiate with the kidnappers and comply with whatever ransom they demanded. The police, reassuring the family, pledged to pursue the kidnappers once the victims were safely released.
This disturbing revelation underscores a concerning aspect of corruption within the country, particularly in the context of the escalating incidents of kidnappings for ransom.
