Lokoja, Kogi State – April 10, 2025 — In a bold step toward economic diversification, Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has unveiled state-of-the-art mining equipment and announced the acquisition of 15 mining licenses to kick-start large-scale exploration and development of the state’s vast solid mineral resources.
The unveiling ceremony, held at the Muhammadu Buhari Civic Centre in Lokoja on Friday, was described as a turning point in Kogi’s economic transformation by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah.
According to the statement, Governor Ododo emphasized that the newly acquired mining licenses and equipment will position Kogi as a leading state in Nigeria’s mining industry. He added that the initiative aims to reduce the state’s dependence on federal allocations by harnessing local resources for internally generated revenue.
“This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce our reliance on federal allocations. The 15 licenses secured will allow Kogi to begin large-scale exploration and mining, ensuring sustainable economic growth,” the governor said.
Kogi State is endowed with over 30 solid minerals in commercial quantities, including gold, lithium, coal, and limestone, many of which remain untapped. Governor Ododo stated that the new mining effort will not only diversify the economy but also create job opportunities and improve the livelihoods of residents across the state.
“Kogi will no longer wait for federal allocations but will take its future into its own hands through this mining initiative,” he declared.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, reaffirmed the state’s readiness to play a leading role in Nigeria’s mining sector. He said the 15 mining licenses were secured through the Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited, and the state is now prepared for immediate exploration and mining operations.
“Being a major player in the mining sector requires equipment, laws, and policies. We are prepared to meet these requirements,” Engr. Gegu noted.
He described the mining sector as a vital revenue-generating industry and reiterated the government’s commitment to creating a solid legal and operational framework to ensure the sustainable development of the sector.
With this development, Kogi State joins the league of sub-national entities leveraging Nigeria’s untapped solid minerals potential for economic advancement.
