President Tinubu Reaffirms ECOWAS Commitment to Diplomacy in Resolving Political Crises
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Germany’s President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, of the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) dedication to deploying diplomatic efforts in reintegrating Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic into the regional bloc.
Key Highlights of the Meeting
During a state visit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, emphasized the regional body’s focus on maintaining constitutional order and prioritizing the welfare of citizens in the affected nations.
- On Unconstitutional Governments:
Tinubu stated that ECOWAS remains committed to non-tolerance for unconstitutional governments while ensuring that innocent citizens are not penalized. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy in addressing the crises without exacerbating the hardships faced by ordinary people.“We will continue to explore diplomatic channels to navigate without punishing the innocent people,” Tinubu said.
- Transition Plans:
Tinubu highlighted the reluctance of the military regimes in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger to present clear transition programs. Despite this, he assured that ECOWAS would remain open to dialogue and collaboration to restore democracy.
German President’s Response
President Steinmeier acknowledged the economic and security implications of the current situation in the three West African countries. He emphasized the need for regional cooperation and urged ECOWAS to continue leveraging diplomacy to resolve the crises.
“While you are using diplomatic means… you should have emergency plans in place for future economic cooperation,” Steinmeier said.
