In the midst of the ongoing crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the dynamics involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have come to the forefront. The Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, BM, addressed his relationship with Atiku and the unfolding situation.
“Atiku is our leader, and he has shown remarkable maturity,” BM stated, highlighting Atiku’s quiet stance throughout the turmoil. When questioned if Atiku could be working behind the scenes, BM acknowledged the normalcy of such politics, noting, “What I say publicly is only about 10% of what I’m doing behind the scenes.” He further explained that behind-the-scenes maneuvering is common in political arenas, especially regarding leadership roles.
Reflecting on his personal dynamics with Nyesom Wike, BM shared, “Initially, I sympathised with Wike because he was hurt by Atiku’s candidacy.” Wike had previously backed other candidates during the primaries, and BM noted that had Wike expressed his intention to run, he would have considered stepping aside. “I didn’t want the ticket to become a northern affair,” he asserted, emphasizing his commitment to a more national representation.
When asked why he didn’t withdraw in favor of Wike during the primaries, BM responded, “Because I’m a nationalist. I don’t represent just the North or the South—I represent the entire country.” He recalled being approached by former PDP Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to withdraw for Atiku but refused, believing it was not his place to step aside after reaching that point.
BM expressed a sense of betrayal when Wike was not chosen as the vice-presidential candidate, despite the collective recommendation from governors, the National Working Committee (NWC), and stakeholders. “We expected him to make a significant contribution to the party, but it didn’t happen, which led to the formation of the G5,” he explained, alluding to the faction formed by Wike and other aggrieved governors.
Despite his criticisms of Atiku’s handling of the situation, BM acknowledged his statesmanlike demeanor, stating, “Atiku has remained quiet and not imposing himself. That’s why I respect him.” He concluded by urging Wike to exercise self-respect and recognize the importance of allowing space for others to rise within the party. “Politics is about live and let live. It’s an opportunity for everyone,” he remarked, calling for unity and collaboration as the PDP navigates its current challenges.
