There is growing speculation about the 2027 general elections following a high-profile visit by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd.) to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.
The visit, which took place on Friday, was made public through photos shared on X (formerly Twitter) by Buhari Sallau, a media aide to the former president.
In his post, written in Hausa, Sallau stated:
“Maigirma Tsohon Shugaban Kasa, Muhammadu Buhari ya karbi Bakuncin Tsohon Gwamnan Jihar Kaduna, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Tsohon Shugaban Sojojin Kasa Gen, Tukur Yusuf Buratai A Gidansa Dake Kaduna, Yau Juma’a.”
(Translation: “The esteemed former President, Muhammadu Buhari, received the former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, and the former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, at his residence in Kaduna today, Friday.”)
Although the details of their discussions remain undisclosed, the meeting has fueled speculation, particularly regarding the 2027 elections and political realignments within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
El-Rufai, a key figure in the APC, has been a strong political force in the North, while Buratai, known for his military background, has been linked to strategic political movements in recent years. Their meeting with Buhari, a respected political leader, has raised questions about possible plans for the next electoral cycle.
Political analysts suggest that this could be an early move toward political consultations and alliances ahead of 2027. Others, however, believe it could simply be a courtesy visit.
